About Us
Chantage is one of the UK’s leading amateur choirs. Founded in 1999 by Musical Director James Davey, it quickly established itself in London as a stylish and energetic chamber choir. Drawing singers from across London and the South East, Chantage brings together people from all walks of life, united by a shared commitment to musical excellence.
That commitment has helped forge a reputation as an award-winning and versatile ensemble. Chantage won BBC Radio 3 Choir of the Year in 2006, the Grand Prix at the Malta International Choir Festival in 2015, and most recently the Choir Challenge at the 2025 Mrs Sunderland Festival in Huddersfield.
Chantage performs a wide-ranging repertoire and regularly collaborates with artists across genres. Highlights include appearances at the Brighton Early Music Festival and London A Cappella Festival, and performances at venues such as the Royal Festival Hall (with Paco Peña), The Purcell Room (with MC Zani), Union Chapel (with the Swingle Singers), Abbey Road Studios (live album recording with Elbow and the BBC Concert Orchestra, 2009), and the Royal Albert Hall, where the choir gave a BBC Proms world premiere with the Aurora Orchestra in 2014. Recordings are frequently broadcast on Classic FM and BBC Radio.
Alongside its performance work, Chantage is committed to supporting the next generation of choral conductors, singers and composers, and has been a co-host of the London International Choral Conducting Competition since 2018.

Our name |
Yes, we know it's French for blackmail, but we like the old English: "singing for your supper" more!
CHANTAGE (a Fr. word from chanter, to sing, slang for a criminal making an avowal under examination), a demand for money backed by the threat of scandalous revelations, the French equivalent of "blackmail". |
